1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I found Hong Kong Language School in the internet when looking for a language course fitting my very tight time schedule. The information was clearly provided and the price for a four weeks course appeared to me quite reasonable in comparison with other offers. Additionally my enquiries about enrolment and payment conditions were answered promptly and in a very friendly manner.

2, How's the school environment?

There is nothing to complain about. It is easily accessible and nicely located.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

The atmosphere in class was perfect. With only one classmate the courses were very intensive. Additionally, I was very happy with the choice of my classmate; we had a lot of fun together in class and found a lot of things to talk about and to discuss. I also had the impression that our two teachers were very well chosen for our interests and our personalities.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

The two teachers we had were perfect, each in her particular way. It was very good to have two different teachers who are both native speakers of Mandarin but come from different areas and have different accents, which forced us to adapt to both of them instead of getting used to just one. Additionally, their respective idiolects and their focus in class were slightly different, partly due to age, partly due to differences in interest. I did not expect to learn so much about different aspects of modern Chinese culture, different ways of life in Hong Kong and Mainland China from two so well informed, nice and open-minded people. We had very lively discussions about many topics of the day, but also about general questions of life in China and in Europe. And we also had a lot of fun together. Carol always prepared some funny games for us, which forced me to talk, and this was exactly what I expected from the course. Additionally she opened conversations about a lot of important practical topics, such as computers, software, mobile phones, etc. and in this way provided us with a lot of relevant vocabulary for everyday purposes. With Lily we had a lot of interesting and well informed discussions about both Ancient and Modern Chinese history which I enjoyed very much. It was always great with both of them. I was never bored even for a minute and I would have liked to continue for another month or two. Already during, and particularly after the course I felt much more confident with my Chinese colleagues, I understand them a lot better now and I am less reluctant to join in a Chinese conversation than I was before.

Thanks a lot again to both of you, Lily and Carol. I really miss our discussions.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

If I ever have the occasion I will definitely come back for another course like the one I had. I learned Modern Chinese mostly on my own, and although I went to some evening classes before, this course was the first that really suited me and my particular interests. It was very good for me to have the opportunity to speak Chinese in an environment that provided normal conversational situations and discussions on everyday topics and did not just follow the (mostly not very interesting) topics in an exercise book. Both teachers always reacted to every question and topic we raised and provided the relevant vocabulary, etc.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Certainly for all the above reasons. If all teachers are like Lily and Carol, nothing can go wrong.

Octavian Cheung from USA

Mandarin Upper Intermediate (4/7 – 13/12, 2011)

I joined HKLS because I had just come to Hong Kong and was interested in improving my Mandarin for work. Unfortunately, because I work full time it makes joining a Mandarin program at a place like Hong Kong University really difficult because the hours are not flexible. So of course I had to find something that was more adaptable to my schedule and that would best fit me.

I had searched for a number of independent programs (HKLS being one of them) and had read the reviews that people had posted. I made a list of places and gave them a visit to see what they were all about.

When visiting HKLS for the first time it was somewhat intimidating because I thought, “Oh man, they are going to laugh at my mandarin”. However I had a different experience that definitely left a good impression.

The staff members were very informative and the teacher that gave me the assessment I found was very charismatic and funny. We had talked about my history and she and the rest of the faculty were able to gauge my level pretty well. Because of this encounter I was able to feel very comfortable, which was the kind of environment I wanted for my class.

After going to the other various schools on my list I unfortunately found that the experience wasn’t quite the same, so based off of that I decided the best choice by far was HKLS.

I was not disappointed.

The school environment was as I expected, very friendly and comfortable. I found it easy to talk with others who may not be in the same class as me or with the teachers of other classes.

The class environment was also nice. What was often the case would be people trying to make each other laugh with what we had learned or what we were learning. Overall it added to the experience and brought different people together.

I had asked to be with the teacher who had given me my assessment, and found she was a very methodical teacher and had a good sense of humor. She took great interest in her students and I feel like a lot was accomplished in her class. Personally I feel I learned what I expected (and a few things I didn’t expect).

I will come back to HKLS when possible. It is a great experience with great people and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning or brushing up on their Mandarin/Cantonese. If you like the laugh and learn, then you should try this school.

David Lunsford from USA

Mandarin Beginners Level 1 & 2 Day Time class (6/10-2/11/2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--My wife took Mandarin classes at HKLS several months ago. She enjoyed her classes very much and the facilities are located nearby my office, making morning classes convenient. Based on her experience I didn't hesitate to enroll into a four week intensive course.

2, How's the school environment?

--The Institute is located on a busy street corner in Wan Chai but, thankfully, street noise isn't heard within the building. It's only a few minutes walk to the nearest metro stop. The school is small but contains all the necessities that one needs to learn a language.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--My class consisted of only a handful of students. We were each from different countries, such as Panama, Japan and Switzerland. Based on differing ages and cultural backgrounds, each of us were learning Mandarin from different reference points but we got along well and had fun in class together.

4, How's your teacher?

--All my classmates enjoyed our teacher. She was always well prepared for our lessons and kept us smiling as we all encountered challenges learning a new and difficult language.

5,Was your class effective?

--Yes - my teacher made sure that everyone was learning a significant amount of Chinese and that no-one fell too far behind at any point. My teacher was obviously well-trained and very patient.

6, Did you learn what you had expected?

--Yes - I am happy with the results of my lessons. I was taking beginner lessons and am of course still a beginner, but at least I can now recognize some words and characters whenever I hear mainland Chinese speak. I can also communicate in basic Mandarin when needed, which was my goal.

7,Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--I will certainly take more lessons at HKLS if my work agenda allows for it. It's a busy time of year for me right now so I've paused for the moment, but I'm looking into taking intensive course again in the springtime.

8, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, of course. It is easy to end up in disappointing language classes (I speak from experience). Since mine and my wife's experience at HKLS has been satisfying, there is good reason to continue to recommend the school to our friends and colleagues. HKLS has a very good formula for success: convenient location, well-trained teachers, and fair prices.

I just wanted to drop a quick note letting you know that Lauren was amazing! She was very attentive, patient and accommodating during our time together. Also, in addition to learning the language, i learned more about the culture, history and current events. Hiring Lauren was an excellent decision on your part - she was phenomenal! Have a great day! =)

Katarzyna Urbaniak from Poland (the second lady from the left)

Mandarin Upper Intermediate to Advanced Full Day Class (5/9 – 12/10, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

- While looking at school’s website I have discovered that lessons schedule is very flexible. You can start class anytime you want and finish any time you want. It was a very important factor for me. The school would adapt to your preference. It is very convenient. I also appreciate the contact with the reception. I have received a full clear information and advice on classes, materials and methods.

2, How's the school environment?

- I loved the school environment. Teachers are very friendly and open-minded. Girls at the reception desk are very helpful and nice. Even school’s space is very well designed for socializing. During breaks everyone from different class and levels can gather together and socialize.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

- I consider myself very lucky. My class consisted of really nice people and I have made great friendships. We studied and we laughed together. It was a great experience.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

- At the beginning I didn’t understand the very well the teacher’s method. However, after a week I have discovered that the class was really effective because I could actually communicate well in Mandarin. After a month of class, not only I wasn’t afraid to speak anymore but also I have gained an adequate amount of Chinese vocabulary and fixed phrases. I had highly qualified teacher. The teaching methods and tips the teacher gave us were really useful and made studying a foreign language easier and pleasant.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

- I am thinking of coming back. HKLS is the first thing I would spend my money on if I stay longer in Hong Kong. I believe it is both a good investment in your language skills and a fun experience with great people.

(Came Back to us and took 2 more weeks - Mandarin Advanced (27/11- 3/11, 2011)

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

- Of course I will recommend HKLS to my friends. No matter they work or study they can always find a class schedule adequate to their needs. You can meet great teachers with outstanding teaching skills and meet new friends. It’s worth be a part of the school!

Sabrina Carpena De Guzman from Philippines (the lady on the left)

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 Evening class (20/9 – 4/11, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

- I was browsing through the website and I came across 3 Language schools. I considered the course fee and the previous students' comments. It is quite inviting to hear them praise the school so I gave it a try. It also fits my schedule because I work the whole day, they provide night classes.

2, How's the school environment

- The school is a great place during day time or night time. It has a snack bar and in between breaks you can hang out by the lobby and talk to other students. Thus, making friends and meeting new people. Teachers are so friendly and always has a smile.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

- The rooms are made for 5-6 people excluding the teacher. You will feel at home. You can interact well with teacher and classmates. I was impressed with the way they use their teaching materials. For example, they write on the glass door instead of a blackboard. It really works.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

- James is a teacher and a friend. I really enjoyed my class. We are a class of 3 students with similar abilities. James helps us to build up our speaking and listening ability. He even adds up additional vocabulary which is not written in the books. I learnt a lot but I'm still eager to learn more.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

- Definitely. Once you started a course and you see improvement with yourself, you should continue it. Unfortunately, the next 2 months my schedule is tight so I might consider taking the next course maybe early next year.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

- I will recommend Hong Kong Language School to my friends or family, whoever is interested to learn Cantonese or Mandarin. Overall, the school is really convenient, affordable and a worthy place to start from scratch if you have no knowledge with any of the language subjects. Give it a go guys!

Mariyah Hoosenally from Singapore

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 Day Time class (8/8 – 19/8, 2011)

Neih hou! The two weeks I spent in the Hong Kong Language School were weeks I would never forget. I chose the Hong Kong Language School amongst the few others in Hong Kong because it stood out to me. The class timings were reasonable, the location was perfect and the course outline was just right. I felt that the school was just right for me the moment I walked in and was welcomed by the friendly staff. I was introduced to my fellow classmates and teachers shortly after and knew that this was right for me. The class environment was extremely fun! I am now confident walking down the streets of Hong Kong. I would to take more classes to expand my Cantonese and talk to the locals. I recommend the HK Language School to anyone who wants to learn the languages of Hong Kong!

Marco Gomezfrom Mexico (the Gentleman in the middle)

Mandarin Day Time class, from Lower Intermediate 4 to Upper Intermediate 2 (12/4 -17/6, 2011)

Switched to Evening class after started a Full Time Job (4/7- 19/9, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I decided to join HK Language School for various reasons.

First, they offered classes at various levels, including mine. It is not uncommon in language schools to have only either basic or advanced levels, with intermediate students left literally, "in the middle". This was not the case, and I was immediately placed in a group adequate to my level.

The school is very conveniently located, with easy access by bus or MTR. The staff was very friendly and helpful when we enquired about the courses and they have a good schedule flexibility. The final (and not least important) reason was cost. Compared to other options, HK Language school is very budget friendly, which added to all the other advantages it has, made my decision to join very easy!

2, How's the school environment?

Once I joined, I felt immediately welcomed. The school environment is indeed friendly, which confirmed my initial impression. They have a good supply of coffee, water and snacks for the students, they are always helpful and attentive, and the teachers are all very friendly. I can confidently say that in a very short time I made a few actual friends, which, as an expat living in a place very far away from home is important and not too easy.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

Definitely going to class and continue learning that you want to do, not simply something you need to do. Learning must be interesting and fun, and in HK Language School they definitely succeed.

Classes are generally made up of 3-4 students, which makes it great for learning. Depending on your level that might be even smaller.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Unlike other places, teachers actually prepare their classes according to each individual's needs. This is priceless. The teachers actually like what they do, and they care about their students. And it shows. They promote learning the language while being as friendly as possible, within the boundaries of good teacher-student dynamics. This is good because after all, we go there to learn. If friendships are created, there is always time for fun after class.

Since I joined I've had two teachers, both being excellent. As I said, they enjoy teaching and sincerely seek that students learn. They understand mandarin is not an easy language to learn, and they are very patient and dedicated. It is very important that they are from Mainland China, not only because of the accent and pronunciation, but also for idiomatic expressions and way of speaking.

My classes have been very effective. I feel I have improved substantially since coming here, and people around me with whom I communicate in mandarin think likewise.

5. Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

I strongly recommend people to come and try learning in the HK Language School, it will be very rewarding!

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

Recommended by relative...

2, How's the school environment?

Easy to find, lots of public transport in the neighborhood...

3, How's the class atmosphere?

Good, very relaxed and yet at a high level...since there was only two students (including myself) in that group, we had enough opportunity to practice a lot.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Carol is a wonderful teacher. She kept the level high and was very flexible. Besides the book contents she also explained other Chinese terms, the meaning and where the expression came from. Also the conversations were very helpful for me to use Mandarin to make sentences. Since THE class was small, we had THE opportunity to practice a lot, so yes I did learn a lot. My main purpose was to get more acquainted with Mandarin Conversation/vocabulary. And I think this was a good start to begin with...

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

Hopefully I get THE chance to!

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Certainly, cos I experienced it to be a good institution....

Edward Murchie from UK, Hong Kong resident (the gentleman on the right)

Mandarin Upper Intermediate and Chinese Reading & Writing (23/6 – 7/7, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

The Hong Kong Language School is an outstanding choice of institute for anyone looking for a high standard of language tuition in Cantonese or Mandarin. The school caters for a broad variety of levels, from the total beginner to the already advanced linguist. Classes in reading/writing and speaking are often taught separately, so someone who is an advanced speaker, but has not learned to read or write in Chinese can take classes in reading, writing and speaking at the appropriate level for each. Alternatively, someone who only wishes to develop their skills in conversation, and has little use for the written language, can take classes exclusively in spoken Chinese.

2, How's the school environment and the class atmosphere?

The administrative staff at HKLS are cheerful, friendly, helpful and seem to take a genuine interest in their students’ learning. As a result, the timetabling is often flexible: the school always does its best to cater for each individual’s schedule.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

The HKLS itself is conveniently located within a minute’s walk from Wan Chai MTR station, and offers a comfortable, friendly learning environment. Class sizes are always small, meaning that each student receives sufficient attention from the teacher and is able to continually contribute to the class. The teaching standard itself is very high. The teachers at HKLS seem professional, experienced, and have an excellent grasp of not only grammar and vocabulary, but also of some of the nuances of the Chinese language: which will prove invaluable to the more advanced learner. Teachers are also able to draw from a solid knowledge of Chinese geography, history and culture, which provides an valuable bonus for those learning Chinese for the purposes of working, studying or traveling in China.

4, Will you come back & take more lessons? And will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Ultimately, not only did I learn a great deal from my tuition at HKLS, I also found the experience wholly enjoyable. I will certainly be returning at the next available opportunity and would thoroughly recommend the school to anyone seeking to develop their skills in the Chinese language.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I choose hkls because you have a lot of programs and dates that start in different periods.

also because of the price, I looked in other schools and the price was a little bit higher and I compared that to hkls and the things they had to offer, specially their small group classes.

Also when I went to ask for information I liked that the staff was really nice, and I also liked the location.

2, How's the school environment?

I liked the school environment and think the tea area really helped to know other students.

I liked the class atmosphere

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Cantonese Private Tuition (13/5- 9/5, 2010 & 3/6, 2011 - Present )

Financial Analyst, Assistant Vice President -- Credit Suisse
External Reporting and Financial Publications
Zurich, Switzerland

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I found the school by chance (or rather luck) in the HK weekly (free) newspaper

-- I think this is a newspaper geared towards expats.  The school was the 1st one that I rang, but I immediately liked how friendly and accommodating the staff was.  I think it was good that they advised me to meet them first before deciding and letting them assess my needs.  They were never pushy (as we know Chinese can be!).  Price was fair, but not the main determinant of my decision making process.

2, How's the school environment?

-- Rooms and communal space were very comfortable and relaxed.  Loved the free drinks and snacks -- which helped keep the energy levels up during 3 - 4 hour private lessons!  Air conditioning was a bit troublesome at times in terms of noise level and finding a comfortable level...my teacher had to keep adjusting it!  Convenient location near MTR.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Structured, but fun and relaxed. Good environment for learning. Learned a lot in each lesson and laughed a lot while doing so.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Loved my teacher. She was professional and fun.  Flexible enough to gauge lessons around personal interests, yet also stayed structured.  I appreciated her discipline with my pronunciation and thorough explanations of proper vs colloquial Cantonese -  and made sure I learned the correct way 1st! I had private lessons so I was better able to personalize the lessons around my needs. My teacher was very good at taking interest in what I liked and tried to develop my vocabulary and speaking / comprehension needs to cater to those type of situations.  I liked her practical approach to what a person should learn.

I think we could have worked more on comprehension since this is a weak area for me.  I seemed to be able to speak, but often misunderstood what was being said to me when being asked or s/he responded.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes, because I felt my teacher knows me well enough to understand my needs and will continue to push me, while still encouraging me and keeping things fun and practical.  I appreciated how flexible / accommodating the staff were to ensure that I could fit in my lessons everyday.  Staff are motivated to teach and considerate to their students.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- I think it is difficult to say that each person will have as positive experience as I did since I had the luxury of having private lessons and also a very good relationship with my teacher.  I would definitely recommend my teacher, but as she is a representative of the school, I would feel more than comfortable to recommend the school itself to my colleagues.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--HKLS was chosen by my work.

2, How's the school environment?

--The school is air-condition controlled, spacious, and clean.  The school environment is extremely comfortable and relaxing for learning.  There are numerous restaurants just outside the school building and a short distance from the MTR, convenient store, and a gym, making the school very convenient.  The snack bar, coffee, and tea is a nice touch to enhance the comfort of the students in between classes.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The class is very relaxed, flexible, and professional.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--Helen is a great teacher.  She is friendly, patient, a good communicator, and funny, all the quality of a good teacher.  She immediately gauged my level on the first day and adjusted my lessons based on my needs for work and personal preference.  Being in class for 7 hours a day, she made classes bearable.  I learned a lot, and all the lessons learned will be put to good use.  In the beginning, I was dreading the long hours, but she made it fun.  Thanks Helen!!

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Absolutely!!  Great learning environment, great staff, and great teachers!!  What's not to like?

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Absolutely, I already recommended the school to my Language Coordinator and my fellow co-workers.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

My company highly recommended it and I have not been disappointed!

2, How's the class atmosphere?

Ours was a really great interactive and fun atmosphere but always emphasized language skills.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Myself and the three other colleagues/students loved our instructor Branda Kwong. She was so personable, persistent, encouraging, and enthusiastic. We also threw a lot of non syllabus related inquires which she always entertained with great humor and insight. The class was very effective as were able to interact and get by in daily Hong Kong life better.

4, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

Sure, I would love to time permitting. It’s not only fun, but a great way to get to know Hong Kong more intimately.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

I would recommend it to those who are serious about Cantonese but also to those who want a more casual, colloquial understanding of the language. Cantonese seems very special in that there is a lot of slang and local intricacies and I think the Hong Kong Language School captures that in its practice and teaching methods.

Thank you for all your support and encouragement, you've given me the confidence to learn a new language and I know this will be a life long journey because the Chinese language is so rich in culture I don't think any outsider would be able to fully grasp it in one seating.

Thank you to all the teachers that helped me and were patient with me as I struggled to organize my thoughts more coherently and though at times it was painful to try to express myself with the limited words that I knew, their support and encouragement made it much easier for me to trust in their wisdom and experience that I would one day be able to communicate my thoughts better.

I'm amazed by how much I've learnt in the span of a little over 4 months. This is truly evidence that your centre is the best in hong kong and your teachers, professionals.

Thank you again and I hope if time allows I can pursue learning this beautiful language further.

Mr. Jerome Parisse-Brassens from Australia (the fourth one from the right, behind Eunice)

Mandarin Beginners to Upper Intermediate Full-day class (28/9, 2010 -10/1, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose to study Mandarin at Hong Kong Language School for two reasons: 1) Its location, in Wan Chai, in the heart of Hong Kong Island, made it very easy to get to; 2) The course I chose was reasonably priced.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school environment is great: Clean, bright classrooms; I especially liked the fact that the walls were used as blackboards, very ingenuous indeed; There is a computer for everyone's use during breaks; and there is an ample supply of biscuits, tea and coffee (and a great view of Wan Chai from the large windows).

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--I enjoyed my class, my teachers and my fellow students who came from all walks of life, including from various countries. Classes are relaxed, but at the same time focussed; 50 minutes of class with a ten minute break seems about right.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--I had two teachers, Carol and Mendy, who were both great to learn from. In fact, they had different styles and complemented each other really well. I was a little surprised at first to see one teacher being replaced by another, without any kind of logic, but it worked, and the transition between both of them was almost always smooth. It was also great that they came from different areas of China and had therefore a different accent and a different way of speaking, as it gave us more exposure to variety in spoken Mandarin. I definitely learned more than what I expected

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--I have reached the advanced level now and need to get out there and practice my Mandarin skills in real life situations. I will be spending a few weeks in China soon and this will be a perfect opportunity to test my language skills outside the school environment.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--I would definitely recommend the school to potential and future fellow students, especially to beginners, as I believe this is where the strength of the school lies

M s. Deepti Malik from India

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 – from 3/11, 2011 until now

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose it because the reviews about the school on the website were very positive.  The place is also located close to my house and so was easily accessible.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The environment at school is friendly

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is open and friendly. The teachers and students interact on a one-on-one basis. There is no hesitation in asking questions which the teacher answers very patiently.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--The teacher was very polite and patient with us. She made it a point to mingle with us at a personal level as well which made us more interested in our lessons. She also went a step forward to teach us writing chinese characters which was over and above her duty. The class was effective though I think the no. of characters that one learns everyday get a bit much by the 3rd and 4th level. But yes, I did learn what I expected and maybe more.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Yes but it also depends on my time schedule in the coming months. I may want to learn beginners level Cantonese next.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Yes i have already recommended a lot of friends.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--We visited a couple of schools and found the HK Language school to be very inviting. Also we had heard from a few people that they would recommend it.

2, How's the school environment?

--The environment is very friendly and extremely welcoming.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--We thoroughly enjoyed our classes as the teachers were very helpful and patient, as well as being a lot of fun.

4, How's your teacher?

--Our teachers were excellent, and always went out of their way to explain the things we struggled with. Was your class effective? As we are very mature age students (!) we struggled a bit with the pace, however we find that we have learned a lot and will be able to revise at our own pace now. Did you learn what you had expected?   We have recieved a good foundation, and are able to converse as well as could be expected in just 4 weeks.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--We hope to! We feel it would be beneficial to add to what we have already learned.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Of course we will recommend HK Language school to friends. Mostly because of the encouragement given and the 'family' atmosphere.

Mr. Adrian Yahvah from USA

Mandarin Beginners & Intermediate Evening class (22/4, 2010 -17/3, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose Hong Kong Language School because it was the first one that Google search brought me to. Since it was located in Wan Chi and convenient for me I decided to give it a try.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school environment is very casual and friendly and the staff is very helpful at the front desk. They provide a hassle free and professional setting at the Hong Kong Language School.

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is very straight forward and professional. It accommodates my needs as a student who needs intensive learning atmosphere.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher, Carol is an exceptional instructor on may levels. She has a superior understanding of the English language which is imperative for helping me learn. She understands that I work hard and on some days need to go slow, on days that I feel fresh she knows to push hard to get my maximal effort. I have learned more than I expected and have continued to come to class which I didn't know I would. Carol makes learning Mandarin fun and engaging with her refreshing and witty personality coupled with her immense skill as an instructor. Her professionalism is unmatched and can't be overstated.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Because of the above reasons I recommend HKLS. I tell all my friends that they are fools if they don't come there to learn Mandarin. I consider Carol and HKLS the ultimate authority on the instruction of authentic mandarin speaking.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I have checked out various schools and also universities, but none of them could offer a flexible? time schedule for classes which met my schedule at reasonable costs.

2, How's the school environment?

--The school is conveniently located just two minutes away from the bus station and a bit more than three minutes to walk by foot from the nearest subway. When entering the school, the first impression is very bright and friendly, which is partly also because of the friendly girls who are welcoming the visitors at the reception. The interior decoration is new and modern, with sufficient class rooms to care even for a bigger number of groups and individual students.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--Making the best out of the transition period between two companies, I have decided to take up with Chinese. After graduating the university more than 20 years ago, this is the first time that I can concentrate on finer things than just sales figures, market shares and financial statements. I really enjoy to step into the Language School every morning and to study together with people from different parts of the world like Italy Columbia, Japan, India ... We have a very open atmosphere during the lessons, mixed with many jokes, and also this helps to master the difficulties of the Chinese language.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--With a completely different linguistically background, I was quite concerned if I would be able to tackle a language like Chinese. But all teachers I have met at the Language School gave me confidence by their easily comprehensible way of teaching and their patience. Actually, my first intention was to acquire just some basic conversation skills. But now I became quite excited about my progress so that I am already planning to attend also the next higher course.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Absolutely yes. Apart from the teaching qualities, I would recommend the Hong Kong Language School for its joyful atmosphere (and for the charming teachers ...). Everybody will immediately feel this friendly atmosphere by  simply giving a phone call to the Language School ...

Sudipta Dharfrom Indian (the first gentleman from the left)

Mandarin Beginners & Intermediate Day Time class (28/9 - 8/12, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I found the school through a Google search. I spoke to Mini and found the school to be quite flexible regarding class timings etc. I had spoken to one other school, but they were not very accomodating.

2, How's the school environment?

--Very good actually. I find the other students to be quite friendly. Also the students come from all over the world, which make the environment even more interesting.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--Very good again. I have had three different sets of classmates, and have enjoyed studying with all of them.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--Helen Ding was my teacher in the first course, and I specifically requested to have her as my teacher for the remaining courses as well. I actually came in with no expectations, and with some apprehension, but found the pace of the class to be well suited suited to my requirements.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Time permitting, I would definitely like to come back and complete the Intermediate levels as well

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Definitely would.

Mr. Tony Hofrom Hong Kong

Mandarin Private Tuition (28/6, 2010 -22/1, 2011)

1, How’s the school environment?

--The school atmosphere is excellent.? All coordinators and teachers are well organized and friendly.? My class schedules are very flexible and I can cancel classes when I have other urgent matters.

2,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is great.? The classroom is noise-free and I can concentrate on listening to my teacher.? Also, the room has sufficient space for my teacher to write on.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--Ms. Liu is the best mandarin teacher that I have so far. ?She is native in mandarin and fluent in Cantonese and therefore, she knows the mistakes that Cantonese people usually make when speaking mandarin.? She spent quite a bit of time to correct my grammatical and pronunciation errors.? In addition, I was able to increase my vocabulary by learning new and useful words.? Most importantly, she shared many of her experience and taught me about the culture of the Chinese people and the current environment in China.? This has enabled me to gain further insight into the Chinese people and perhaps allow me to communicate with them more easily.? Overall, the class is effective and I was able to learn more than I have expected.? Even though it is very difficult for me to speak native-like mandarin, I strongly believe that I can survive in China without encountering big problems.

4, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--I will recommend Hong Kong Language School to my friends and relatives if they seek to increase their mandarin levels and culture awareness of the Chinese people.? The teachers can easily adapt to the students’ needs and concentrate on correcting their weak areas.?

Cantonese Beginners Day Time class (25/11- 23/12, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose Hong Kong Language School because they were very flexible.? They had many different time options to choose from and their staff was very friendly.? Also, the facility looked very presentable and the location is quite close to the MTR.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school’s environment is quite good. There is always a friendly and helpful atmosphere. The school itself feels very “open” and you never feel trapped or cluttered.

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The classrooms are comfortable and clean.? Students are encouraged to ask questions and the teachers always make sure that the students are able to comprehend the material.? You never feel rushed to learn the material.? If there is something is confusing or hard to learn, the teacher slows down and tries to help the students first.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher, Angela, was awesome.? She was very friendly and knowledgeable.? My class was quite effective.? Due to the fact that Angela is flexible, I had learned more than I had expected.?? She was not one of those teachers that only follows the book like a robot.? If there are other things that she feels a student should know, she deviates from the book and teaches her students very useful words/phrases/ sentences.? Also if a student wanted to learn about subjects that were not covered in the course, she would also take time to teach/ explain them.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Of course!? Before choosing Hong Kong Language School, I had called/ visited many other schools around Hong Kong.? Hong Kong Language School was the most flexible.? They always try to work the time schedule around the student, making it convenient.? Besides convenience, the staff is always friendly and welcoming.? Lastly, Hong Kong Language School’s price is quite reasonable compared to others.

6,  Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, I would recommend Hong Kong Language School to my friends.? Due to its convenient location, it is easy to get to.? The staff is very friendly and you are never looked down upon.? The material is designed to make learning Chinese easier and due to their flexibility, you can always learn at your own pace.

Ms Jennifer Hennings from USA

Cantonese Beginners Day Time class (24/11- 21/12, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose HKLS because it had so many positive student reviews on its website, and because it was offering Cantonese classes at a time that worked well for me. I also thought the price was reasonable compared to other programs I'd seen.

2, How’s the school environment?

--HKLS is a friendly place. I like the way that students can have tea and snacks together and chat during the break. It makes it much more social.

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is friendly without being overly lax. I'd say it was "learning with a smile."

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--Vectra is a thoughtful and encouraging teacher. He did a good job of identifying and focusing on words and phrases that were most challenging for me. He also used a good variety of exercises to help me practice. I really feel like I've learned a lot in my four weeks of lessons. The class was quite effective.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--If my schedule allows, I will definitely come back for more lessons, since I like the pace, structure, and price of the HKLS classes.

6,  Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, I've already recommended HKLS to several people, and I'll continue to do so. I think the classes are a great value for the money, and the teachers are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.

Mr. Alex Howard from Britain, Swiss

Mandarin Private Tuition (28/9- 29/10, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- Because it was very convenient. Close to my house and very central relative to Wanchai. It came across as professional to me and the prices were very fair. Upon the visit I felt very welcome and at ease. At that point I had already made up my mind.

2, How's the school environment?

-- Actually quite family like. After a month's time I felt really familiar with the place and everyone. It really had a cosy feel. Saying goodbye to my teacher at the end was rather difficult, a relationship had been building up with the school and the place.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- I only took private lessons with Helen, so it was of course very personalized. It was more of a dialogue than a class. It was very casual but yet very effective and hard-working. From my point of view it really was ideal, especially to learn to express myself.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- My teacher was simply great. She taught me everything from Chinese history, to everyday culture, vocabulary, characters and grammar. She was my first real insight into China I must say. Within 5 weeks time I learned all the basics of the Chinese language. As I now moved to Shanghai I could easily get around, communicate and even explain what kind of phone deal I wanted to my mobile company!

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Of course! If I ever was to move back to Hong Kong from Shanghai (where I know live), I'd probably take a weekly 2-hour course just to maintain my characters and vocabulary.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Of course! I indeed already have. In my own opinion HKLS is the best deal you can find in Hong Kong. Their strongest point is their outstanding flexibility.

So don't be shy, go knock at their door.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I heard about Hong Kong Language School from my friend, and I looked some information about this school on the internet so I decided to try it on.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The school environment is quite suprising me because the environment was over my expectation (which is SUPER!!!) simple and tidy, providing what you need.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The class I had in Russian was 1 to 1 which is nice, more chances to speak and asking questions.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My French teacher was amazing, teaching with heart
I did learn what I expected.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Ofcourse I'm coming back, because this is my second time of learning here.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Mandarin Intermediate Course and Chinese Reading & Writing Course (27/10- 23/11, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I found the school via Google, and the level of attention and friendliness I received when first visiting the school to enquire about classes was well above and beyond any expectations. Branda and her team were incredibly flexible and accommodating in helping me choose the class level, and I even got to sit in on a couple of classes to see what the classroom environment and teaching is like, before deciding.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school is clean and comfortable, with unlimited tea, coffee and choice of snacks provided. All the staff and teachers are friendly and really go the extra mile to make students feel welcome.

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is great, class numbers are kept small so you're really able to bond with your classmates and receive individual tuition from teachers.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teachers were the best! In particular, Carol was not only knowledgeable and professional, she gave us a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, through many of her own stories and her great knowledge of Chinese history, arts and society today. I thought I would only be learning grammar, vocab and sentence structure but all the teachers at HKLS add their personal touch to classes to make them interesting and engaging and you learn things you would never learn from just a textbook.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--If I have the chance to return to Hong Kong, I would definitely take more classes to improve my Mandarin.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--I would highly recommend HKLS to my friends, the school is a great place to learn Chinese.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--I like my teacher Lilly. She works very hard with me on my pronounciation. She also, gives me a chance to try and talk in Mandarin relating to my activities. This is hard for me but she helps a lot. She is a very good teacher.I have taken 3 levels with her and i would like to take more.

4, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--I would recommend this school  to my friends because of the class size and the teaching methods used.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--Flexible schedules, price is reasonable and well located.

2, How’s the school environment?

--Very friendly staff. Clean and comfortable facilities.

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--Private lessons, so there was not really any particular class atmosphere.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher overwhelmed me at first by speaking all in Mandarin, but I learn to gradually understand her, which was fantastic. I think the teaching technique is effective for learning if you are keen to learn set phrases and perhaps a crash course to get you around for holiday traveling purposes.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Yes, I would take more lessons. But I would insist on practicing more verbal conversation, rather than reading from the textbook. Even if it's just 2 or 3 lines, it helps if I can practice the sentences in context.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Yes I would. Staff are friendly and helpful. The school environment is clean and comfortable..

Mandarin Beginner Level 1 & 2, Mandarin Reading & Writing Course (12/11, 2009 – 8/2, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--Compared to other language schools, I found the website to be well-arranged and easy to understand. I thought the course fees were reasonable for Hong Kong and made use of the discount offer for early payment. The location of the school was also very important to me: it is very central.

2, How's the school environment?

--The environment was very pleasant: clean (as was the rest of the building), the receptionists were very friendly, and there was always free tea, coffee, and little snacks for everyone in the entrance/leisure area. With the school being on one of the upper floors, the rooms are quite light. The outside environment, too, is very convenient, with lots of small places to have lunch at, a mall to have coffee down the road, and MTR as well as tram stops within a few minutes' walking distance.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The first course I took was for learning and practising speaking: my 4 other classmates were from places all over the world and we soon started meeting for lunch, etc. Altogether, the atmosphere was very friendly and also interesting as there was a noticable cultural exchange as well.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--The teacher of the first course I attended tried to respond to everone's particular needs, and was very attentive to help with individual difficulties (pronunciation, etc.) In the second course I took, I was on my own, to learn and practise writing characters. The teacher encouraged me a lot and contributed to?my lasting enthusiasm for Mandarin. The classes were both very effective and gave me a good start into learning Mandarin (I still take lessons now back in Europe).

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends?

--I will recommend HKLS to anyone who wants to study Chinese in Hong Kong. For all the above reasons ;-)
